Is it surprising? I’m sure one could google Rep. Darrell Issa decrying federal government interference and advocating state rights and less government. What would that guy say if he weren’t in power? Does he realize how corrosively transparent his political motives appear when compared to his stated principles? I doubt he truly cares about anything more than power. I am no fan of Ms. Nichols. Yet I feel bad she is likely going to have to kowtow before Mr. Issa and his imperial prerogative.

Perfecting His Irish on the Job – The jolly trash man was going about his route in the Rockaways, Queens, when he spied a woman in front of her house.

“Cé hé bhfuil tú?” he greeted her.

Naturally, the woman replied, “Tá mé go maith.”

“Ceart go leor,” the trash man shot back.

This exchange — roughly: “How are you?” “I’m fine.” “Ah, grand!” — was in Irish, the Gaelic language that survives only in parts of Ireland — and to a lesser extent, along the garbage route of Ed Shevlin, 51. The route winds through the Belle Harbor section of the Rockaways, where conversations were once commonly conducted “as Gaeilge.” COREY KILGANNON NY Times

Yes, he chose to retire. It’s probably because he wasn’t going to get White House support in his re-election campaign. Rather than actually work hard, tirelessly campaign and fight for what he believes Rep. Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced is going to “retire”. Or in Washington-speak that means he’s going to be a D.C. lobbyist and make boat loads of money. What a tough break?! Something tells me he supported Hillary in 2008. So, there isn’t a place for him in the Obama White House or Administration…and also probably why the White House won’t support his re-election bid. It’s the way politics works. He knew that getting into this business. Good riddance…he makes himself seem very small and petty with these rants (if you can read between the lines or see behind closed doors with your mind’s eye).

Merced Democrat Cardoza to retire from House — The newly announced retirement of Rep. Dennis Cardoza, D-Merced, culminates a decades-long San Joaquin Valley political career and eliminates a potential primary battle with his longtime friend, Rep. Jim Costa, D-Fresno, in a newly redrawn congressional district. Michael Doyle in the Fresno Bee Richard Simon in the Los Angeles Times — 10/21/11

California Dem rips White House ‘inaction’ — Dennis Cardoza didn’t simply announce his retirement. The California Democratic congressman went out with guns blazing Thursday, torching the Obama administration as he revealed he would not run for reelection in 2012.

Elliott Gould on Groucho Marx, Ingmar Bergman and acting – An only child growing up in Brooklyn, Gould said he was “very withdrawn and shy and inhibited and repressed.” So at age 9 his parents brought him to a “song and dance school” to help him. “There were others like me, and I felt, well, in terms of communicating, if I memorized a routine maybe I could be able to communicate through routines.” -
Susan King, 24 Frames LA Times blog
I saw the blog post title and thought I wonder what Elliot Gould might share. The italicized line above resonated with me. Which part? I’m not an only child. I’m the oldest (of two). I didn’t grow up in Brooklyn. Although, that would have been cool (and I’d be a hipster by default). I grew up in West Covina. It was a safe place to grow up which was great don’t get me wrong…yet I always feel embarrassed sharing it. It’s as dull and uninspiring as a slab of concrete.
The part that did resonate was the part about being very withdrawn, shy, inhibited and repressed. I found inspiration from his solution. I know what you might be thinking…oh no, another aspiring actor (they are certainly the bane of Los Angeles). Rather I feel inspired to do more reading. Perhaps even re-read a book or play or two (which I never do) in order to find passages that might help me speak my mind. I will probably put them in writing (somewhere here) before I decide to memorize anything for recitation.

OH MY! This story seems so unbelievable. What I wouldn’t give to see video of the chaos that must have ensued…This is a made for tv movie. Or it could be a video game (first person shooter, of course). Imagine you are the sheriff (and the only law enforcement officer) of a small town with an animal preserve. The game starts with a message that all the animals have been set free. It is your job to hunt them.
What an opportunity to experience big game hunting?! You don’t even have to go on safari…
As I read the report I also cringed a bit. (I cringed more when I looked at these photos.) I understand animal rights groups decrying the death of so many creatures. However, from a public safety perspective what else is there to do. It seems to take hours just to locate, capture and then relocate a black bear or mountain lion here in southern California! There were more than 20 large dangerous animals wandering around Zanesville.
I wonder what happens to the preserve now that it’s empty. Will it disappear into civic history and folk lore? Or will someone decide to start it up again?
I am having a difficult time getting the image of deputies with assault rifles roaming around in the back of pick-up trucks hunting big game. It’s both exhilirating and disturbing.
Perhaps this was all a disaster just waiting to happen…
